Love, curry and diarrhoea pills.
A story of a madcap trip to India, Nepal and Pakistan by three hero-wannabes.

darjeeling dogs and gangtok glimpses

The last day in Darjeeling was spent partly at The Elgin (muahahhaha) having high tea. It was pretty expensive, and we felt cheated. But the ambience and decor was great. I felt like some English tai-tai.

Some pictures of the food we got...

The 2 dogs that were kept on the compound of The Elgin (Muahahaha) were very cute and pretty! Especially the one that looks like a wolf. I couldn't stop playing with her!

Moving off to Gangtok... The jeep car park

Our jeep... and driver

The other passengers... we were sitting at the back.

An hitchhiker...

The fog was rather thick and pervasive...

After a while, we realised that we were in the clouds, literally.

Entering Sikkim requires all vehicles to go past the Rangpo checkpoint, where tourists have their passports and permits checked. The security here at Sikkim is higher than at other Indian states we have been through so far.

The jeep left us at the car park which was at the bottom of the hill leading up to the main city centre in Gangtok. I.e. we have to carry and lug our bags up the hill. We, rather stupidly, rejected concerned taxi drivers who told us to hop onto their taxis.
This is Mahatma Gandhi Road, or MG Marg as the locals call it. This is the main tourist belt/street in Gangtok. We spent the night at a hotel along this road.

This is Tibet Road, the closest thing to a backpacker's ghetto you can get in Gangtok. We booked our trek here.

Schoolgirl goign to school in the morning... they are better dressed than our own Singaporean school girls!

Our hotel room...
And, just when you think that Sikkim is somehow sheltered/immune from the random Indian madness that peppered Calcutta and Chennai, we see this just outside our hotel room door:

I was clearly very amused. Imagine me working in a law firm that has its office just opposite a hotel room, in a hotel.
